JotCache is advanced solution for page caching in Joomla framework. This solution replaces standard System-Cache plugin and it usually works along enabled Global Cache Settings. It consists from two major parts - JotCache plugin performing functions related to file caching and JotCache component allowing cache management. Additionally can be used JotCache Cron for periodical cache cleaning (garbage collection of expired cached items). For moderate loaded web sites is available in plugin as standard feature autoclean function.

Development of JotCache started more as one year ago with first version coming out in June 2010. At first thought as experimental proof-of-concept next versions of JotCache were used on different web sites some of them very large and heavy loaded with good results and administrators perceiving. Users feedback allowed to extend and steady further develop its functions. More as 15 thousands downloads were reached till now. It is time to enhance JotCache for better performance and management.

New JotCache ver.2.0 is fully redesigned page caching solution coming from base of previous versions with these major features :

• Reworked cache management with faster opening on larger web sites – the cached files are presented with cached page titles and links, added more informations about cached page (browser type, language, non-routed query string), implemented items ordering, changed information about date/time of caching (incl. indication of expired or no more existing cache files)

• Better exclusion of selected pages from page caching

• Upgraded plugin functions for more powerfull autoclean (garbage collection) activity and browser caching.

• New common installer for one-step installation of JotCache component and plugin in upgrade mode

JotCache development for Joomla 1.5 framework had proved right concept and operation on different web sites worldwide. With steady feedback of administrators of these web sites it was possible to include more interesting features for practical daily usage. With comming Joomla 1.6 framework several implementation possibilities were analysed and it was decided to implement proven page cache solution inside new J1.6 environment. Nowadays JotCache ver.1.3/J1.6 has features of JotCache plugin ver.1.3/J1.5 and upgraded functions of JotCache component ver.1.2.1. New version of JotCache for Joomla 1.6 is presented on web download page.

Based on positive response to JotCache page caching solution from administrators of larger business oriented Joomla web sites were new features included in JotCache plugin ver.1.3 :

• Browser split – many Joomla templates systems are using separate templates for different browser types (mostly Internet Explorer). With splitted cache storage space for different browser types you can avoid unacceptable mixing of unproper templates to site users (cached page content is not rendered when non-expired page exists in the cache). New version of JotCache has now possibility to set different page caches based on user browser type. Standart options allows to have different caches for Internet Explorer browsers - IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9. All other browser types are using common page cache.

• Mobile phone request exclusion - when selected then all browser requests from mobile phones are excluded from page caching. This selection is used in the case when template system has separate template(s) for mobile phone browsers. Because of great variety of mobile browsers this solution is more practicable as splitting cache space on plenty of small chunks.
• Cache Auto Clean - function allowing regular cleaning of expired page files from the server file system during normal operation of JotCache plugin. Proper setting of auto clean function is supported with optional logging of main parameters of the clean operations.
